Baked once, streamed everywhere.
The magic is in the bake, not in the app. A region is baked offline from open geodata into streaming 3D tiles and served from an edge cache; drop in any GPX and the view is live, with no processing per route and no render farm.
Sources
- Belgium, the Netherlands, Luxembourg, France and Germany: national and regional lidar at 0.5 to 1 m (SPW, DHM Vlaanderen, AHN, ACT, IGN LiDAR HD, the Länder's DGM1).
- Switzerland and Liechtenstein: swisstopo swissALTI3D and swissSURFACE3D at 0.5 m, with SWISSIMAGE.
- Austria: the BEV airborne laser scan, terrain and surface at 1 m, with the basemap.at orthophotos.
- Italy: regional lidar in South Tyrol, Friuli Venezia Giulia, the Aosta Valley, Piedmont, Liguria and Sardinia, INGV TINITALY at 10 m elsewhere, and the AGEA orthophotos.
- Regional orthophotos for the imagery and the roofs.
- Copernicus and national vegetation layers for the trees and their species.
- OpenStreetMap for buildings, bridges, landmarks, water and paths.
All open, all attributed.
In the browser
- WebGL, on desktop and phone, with nothing to install. It is also a progressive web app: install it from the browser and it opens in a window of its own, like any other app on the desktop.
- The trail is matched to the baked path network in the browser.
- Trees, houses, water, grass, animals and sound are generated on the device from the baked layers.
- Videos and 3D-printable models are made on the device too.
A new region
New regions are prepared as they are needed, given processors, memory, disk space and a little patience: it is a balancing act. Where a border meets a neighbour, the neighbour's own survey is sourced so the border strip stays as sharp as the rest.
